Although menstruation has been defined as a normal and healthy biological phenomenon in women, there are many religious and cultural malpractices that surround it. Due to the lack of knowledge and proper understanding of menstruation and the biological process there are many stigmas that surround this natural occurrence in women. One such taboo is Chhaupadi, segregation of women from their family and their houses during menstruation. Chhaupadi is comprised of two words from the local Raute dialects in which “Chhau” means menstruation and “padi” means women. Chhaupadi is a traditional practice in the far western and the mid-western region of Nepal in which menstruating women are considered impure and are banished to cow sheds or tiny huts outside their houses and abandoned from touching the family members, water resources, plants or enter the kitchen.
